Instructor Bio

Jeremy Hutson, M.M., owner

Mr. Hutson began playing guitar at age 14 after having studied piano for nearly 5 years.  Motivation came from his parents, and from attending summer camp and listening to popular music.  His birth father, Steve Hutson, was an accomplished guitarist, instructor, and recording artist.  Mr. Hutson's first guitar was an nice beginner Yamaha steel-stringed acoustic graciously purchased by his parents, Gary and Sue Griffith, from Don Randall Music.  Until college, he was mostly self-taught, learning rock and other popular styles, folk, and some fingerstyle.  He started out by learning from a chord book without reading notes, by listening to songs and learn them "by ear" and then eventually using tablature, and by playing with friends and from a few mentors.  In 1993, he decided that learning classical guitar was the best way to improve his knowledge and ability, and in college grew to love the classical guitar and its unique and wonderful music.  Even then, he was in various rock bands in addition to studying classical and performing in recitals and concerts.  After receiving a Bachelor of Music degree in Applied Music, Guitar from Covenant College in 1997, Mr. Hutson returned to Quarryville to pursue graduate studies at West Chester University. After having taught a few students during college, he then began teaching and performing locally.  In May of 2000 he completed his studies, earning the degree of Master of Music in Guitar Performance.  Mr. Hutson's Bachelor's thesis was a lecture-recital and paper on the history and music of the lute, the immediate predecesssor to the guitar.  Teaching mostly rock and beginner guitar students, Mr. Hutson still practices the classical guitar every day.

Along with maintaining his own private studio, Mr. Hutson has served on the faculties of The Lancaster Conservatory of Music, Philadelphia Biblical University, The Pennington School, and The Csehy Summer School of Music. He is also a certified member of the Registry of Guitar Tutors, and is the Mid-Atlantic area representative for the RGT. He is also registered Fretboard Logic™ instructor, and a member of the Lancaster Music Teachers Association. He has performed for a master class with the Gray and Pearl Guitar Duo and has been an adjudicator for the Pennsylvania Music Teacher’s Association’s (PMTA) Dorothy Sutton Festival. Mr. Hutson has also given master classes, clinics, and lectures in colleges, schools, and for various institutions and events. In October of 1999 he was a prize winner at the Pennsylvania/Delaware String Teachers Association (PADESTA) competition at Penn State University. As a performer, award-winning classical guitarist Jeremy Hutson performs for a variety of events, including: concerts, recitals, wedding ceremonies and receptions, charity events, and private parties.
